Rostral
towards the beak (rostrum); applies to the head only
Dorsal
towards the back (dorsum)
Ventral
towards the belly (venter)
Cranial
towards the head (cranium)
Caudal
towards the tail (cauda)
Lateral
towards the side (latus, flank) of the animal; farther from the median plane
Proximal
toward the junction (proximus, near) w/ the body
Distal
away from the main body (distantia, distance)
Palmar
towards the “rear” (palma, palm of the hand) of the front limbs
Plantar
toward the “rear” (planta, sole of the foot) of the hind limbs
Medial
towards the middle plane (medianus, in the middle) that divides the body into two symmetrical right and left “halves” (it is a version of the sagittal plane)
Sagittal
any plane parallel to the medial plane
Paramedian
any sagittal plane that is close to the medial plane
Dorsal
runs at right angles to the median and transverse planes ∴ divides the body/head into dorsal and ventral portions.
Transverse
transects the body, limbs, or head perpendicular to its long axis
