Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Anatomical position
the body standing up straight and facing forward, with arms by the sides of the body and palms facing forward. The legs are straight, and the feet are slightly apart from one another and turned outward slightly.
Anatomical planes
The three principal planes that the human body is divided to facilitate viewing its structure.
Sagittal/Mid-sagittal plane
Frontal/Coronal plane
Transverse/Horizontal plane
Abduction
adduction
Moving a body part away from the midline of the body.
Adduction
abduction
Moving a body part towards the midline of the body.
Anterior
Posterior
Towards the front of body.
Bilateral
unilateral
On both sides of the body
Central
peripheral
Towards the centre of an anatomical system.
Circumduction
Tri-planar, circular motion at the hip or shoulder.
Contralateral
On the opposite side of the body.
Deep
Superficial
A body structure closer to the core of the body than another structure.
Depression
Elevation
Lowering a body part.
Distal
proximal
Away from the attachment point of a limb.
Dorsal direction
ventral
Towards the back
Dorsiflexion
Plantarflexion
Ankle movement bringing the foot towards the shin.
Dorsum
Palmar
On either the back of the hand or back (top) of the foot
Elevation
Depression
Raising a body part.
Extension
flexion
Straightening a joint or increasing the angle between two bones.
Eversion
Inversion
Moving your foot so the sole faces outward.
External/Superficial
internal/deep
Towards the surface of a body.
PLANE 2
Frontal/Coronal
The plane dividing the body into front and back portions
External rotation
Internal rotation
Rotation of the hip or shoulder from the midline.
