Epigastric
Area of abdomen over the stomach.
Flank
The right or left area on the back just below the rib cage.
Inguinal
Lower abdomen over the stomach.
Periumbilical
Area of the abdomen around the umbilicus.
Suprapubic
Lower abdomen, area over the pubic bones.
Frontal
Forms the front portion of the skull above the eyes and includes the forehead, the roof of the nasal cavity, and the roofs of the orbits.
Occipital
A saucer shaped membrane bone situated at the back and lower part of the skull.
Parietal
Located on each side of the skull just behind the frontal bone. It is shaped like a curved plate and has four borders. Top of the skull extending to the back of the skull.
Temporal
Situated at the sides and base of the skull.
Vertebrae
Individual bones of the spine.
Vertebral Column
Spinal column
Cervical Spine
The first seven (7) bones of the spinal column. Identified as C1 - C7.
Atlas (Vertebrae)
The first vertebrae of the spinal column identified as C1. Supports front to back movement of the head.
Axis (Vertebrae)
The second bone of the spinal column identified as C2. Supports the movement of the head side to side.
Thoracic Spine
Following the cervical spine, the next twelve (12) vertebrae of the spinal column. Identified as T1 - T12.
Lumbar Spine
Following the thoracic spine, the next five (5) vertebrae of the spinal column. Identified as L1 - L5.
Sacrum
Following the lumbar spine, a flat triangular bone composed of five segments that gradually fuse.
Coccyx
Following the sacral spine, four small segments that are fused. It is also know as the tailbone.
Anterior/Ventral
Front or belly side.
Distal
Away from the center of origin.
Dorsal, Dorsum
Relating to the back or posterior of a structure (i.e. back of the hand).
Inferior/Infra
Below
Lateral
To the side.
Medial
To the middle.
Posterior/Dorsal
Backside
Proximal
Toward from the center of origin.
Superior/Super/Supra
Above
Volar
Pertaining to the palm or the sole.
