Anatomical terminology Flashcards
process
bridge to another bone or a projection
fossa
depression in bone
meatus
tunnel or hole, larger than a foramen
mastoid
indicates large size
condyle
smooth rounded projection which allows two bones to articulate
Ligament
dense bone to bone connective tissue that permits normal movement but restricts extra movement
Tendons
muscle to bone connective tissue that is closely associated with or travels through a joint
Menisci
AKA articular discs
fibrocartilage pads that improve joint congruency
Fat pads
soft deformable space fillers for when the joint moves and joint cavity changes shape
Labra
fibrocartilage rings attached to the edge of a socket to increase the depth and therefore stability of the joint
Bursae
synovial membrane lined sacs that are separate or continuous with the joint located at sites of friction
e.g. tubular bursae (synovial sheaths) surround some tendons where they cross bones
