What are the three planes of the body?
- Midsagittal = divides into right and left
- Dorsal = divides into top and bottom
- Transverse = divides into front and rear
What does medial mean?
Medial is a directional term that means towards the midline.
What does lateral mean?
Lateral is a directional term that means away from midline.
What does cranial mean?
Cranial is a directional term that means closer to head
What does caudal mean?
Caudal is a directional term that means closer to tail or away from the nose

Rostral is a directional term for the head means towards the nose.
What does dorsal mean?
Dorsal is a directional term that means closer to the back or the cranial aspect of paws (“top of the feet”)

Ventral is a directional term that means closer to the underside belly.

Anterior is a directional term that means front of the body.

Posterior is a directional term that means rear of the body.

Superior is a directional term that means uppermost, above, or toward the head

Inferior is a directional term that means lowermost, below, or towards the tail.

Proximal is a directional term for limb that means closer to attachment of limb to body.
