Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
What is the anatomical position?
- Body erect
- Feet slightly apart
- Palms face forward
4.Thumbs point away from body
What is the difference between superior and inferior? What are the other ways to say this?
above/below
cranial/caudal
What is the other way to say anterior and posterior?
Ventral/dorsal
What does medial and lateral reference?
closeness to the midline (center point) of body
What does distal and proximal refer to and encompass?
closeness of attachment to main body cavity (trunk)
also can be used as superior and inferior in reference to the head
What is considered thoracic? What body parts are included in it?
Chest,
sternal, axillary, mammary
What is considered the upper limb?
Acromial, brachial, antecubital/olecranal, antebrachial, carpal
What are the parts of the hand? What is the medial term of hand?
Manus
palmar, pollex, digital
What are the parts of the lower limb?
Coxal (hip), femoral, patellar/popliteal, crural, sural, fibular/peroneal
What is your leg, calf, side of the leg called?
crural, sural, fibular (peroneal)
What is the difference between leg and thigh?
femoral, crural
femoral is above knee crural is below
What is considered the pedal? What does that mean?
foot
tarsal (ankle), calcaneal heal), digital, plantar (sole of foot), hallux (big toe)
What body parts are located on the dorsal?
scapular, vertebral, lumbar, gluteal, perineal
What is the back of the head called?
Occipital
What is the difference between patellar and popliteal?
Patellar (kneecap) , popliteal (back of knee)
What is considered posterior in the cephalic region?
otic, occipital
Is cervical part of anterior and posterior views?
yes
What is the dorsum?
dorsal/back
What is the difference between scapular and sacral?
Scapular is the shoulder blade
Sacral is region on back between hip bones below the lumbar region
Where is the perineal located?
Between anus and external genitalia
What is on the posterior side view of the pedal?
calcaneal and plantar (sole of foot)
What are the different body planes? Describe the differences between them
Median/ sagittal –> midsagittal (left and right)
Frontal/coronal (front and back)
Transverse (cut at hips)
What are the two main body cavities?
Dorsal, ventral
What is included in the dorsal body cavity? What do they contain?
cranial cavity (brain)
vertebral cavity (spine)
What are the two main sections of the ventral body cavity? What do they contain?
Abdomino-pelvic cavity (abdominal (digestive organs), pelvic (urinary bladder, reproductive organs, rectum)
Divided by diaphragm
Thoracic (heart and lungs )
What is the membrane of the ventral body cavity?
Serosa, serous membrane
lines inner cavity walls (pariteal serosa) and external surface of organs (visceral serosa)
Pleura (serous membrane for lungs)
Pericardium (serous membrane for heart)
Peritoneum (abdominal viscera/stomach/kidney area)
What membrane surrounds the dorsal cavities?
Meninges
What are the four quadrants of the abdominal-pelvic region?
Right and left of patient
RUQ, LUQ, RLQ, LLQ
What are the nine regions of the abdominal pelvic area?
Right hypochondriac region
Right lateral (lumbar region)
Right inguinal region
Epigastric
Umbilical
Pubic (hypogastric)
Left hypochondriac
Left lateral lumbar
Left inguinal iliac
