Anatomical Position Flashcards
Medial
Toward the midline
Lateral
Away from the midline
Proximal
Toward the point of attachment of a limb to the trunk. E.g. The shoulder is proximal to the wrist.
Distal
Away from the point of attachment of a limb to a trunk. E.g. the fingers are distal to the wrist
Cranial or Cephalic
Toward the head
Posterior
The back surface, Dorsal is also the back so can be referred to this as well
Caudal
Toward the tail
Anterior
The front surface
Ventral
The belly side, is equivalent to anterior when referring to the human body.
Superior
Above; at a higher level
Inferior
Below; at a lower level
What’s the anatomical position?
Standing Facing forward Feet together Arms by sides Hands supinated (palms forward)
Superficial
A shallow wound
Deep
A deep wound
What’s the sectional planes?
Frontal or Coronal plane = orientated parallel to the vertical axis. Separates the anterior and posterior parts of the body.
Sagittal Plane= also orientated parallel to long axis however separates the left and right side of the body.
Transverse or Horizontal plane = orientated perpendicular to the long axis, it separates the superior and inferior parts of the body.
