ANATOMICAL POSITION Flashcards
Flexion
Bending a joint in Sagittal plane (divides body into right and left)
Extension
Straightening the joint; occurs in the sagittal plane (meaning right or left)
Abduction
Divides the body in half median plane
The median or midsagittal plane, is one of the imaginary planes that intersect the body, dividing it into parts or ‘slices’. The median plane is a vertical plane that passes through the midline of the body and bisects the body into two symmetrical halves: right and left.
Adduction
the movement of a body part towards the body’s midline. The opposite of adduction is abduction, which is when a body part moves away from the midline.
Lifting arm up and down
Lateral Flexion
a movement that involves bending the body or a body part sideways
Supination
A rotational movement in anatomy where the palm of the hand or sole of the foot faces upward
Retraction
the movement of a body part back towards its original position or midline.
Elevation
the movement of a body part upward
Depression
a downward or inferior movement of a body part. It is the opposite of elevation.
For example, the depression of the shoulder occurs when the shoulder blade moves downward. Similarly, the depression of the tongue occurs when it moves downward in the mouth.
The frontal plane
Frontal plane creates the anterior Front portions of the body.
Sagittal plane
Sagittal plane divides body into left and right.
Mistral cuts through the exact center of body or organ
Traverse plane
Horizontal plane creates the upper and lower sections of the body
