What is the Standard Anatomical Position?
- Standing (or on back)
- Feet together
- Palms facing forward
- Looking forward
Why is the Standard Anatomical Position set up the way it is?
to uncross the bones in the arms and legs
What are the two main groups of the Cranial Skeleton?
crania and the mandible
Why is the Cranial Skeleton separated from the Post-Cranial Skeleton?
because there are so many bones in the cranium
What bones are included in the Post Cranial Skeleton?
everything not included in the Cranial Skeleton
How many Planes of Reference are there? What are they?
- Frontal (coronal) plane: dividing the body into front and back halves by the coronal suture
- Sagittal plane: dividing the body into left and right halves by sagittal suture
- Transverse (horizontal) plane: dividing the body into top and bottom halves by the hips
What is the term Superior referring to?
towards the head
What is the term Inferior referring to?
away from the head
What is the term Anterior (Ventral) referring to?
front half of the body
What is the term Posterior (Dorsal) referring to?
back half of the body
What is the term Medial referring to?
towards the midline or the centre of the body
What is the term Lateral referring to?
away from the midline of the body
What is the term Proximal referring to?
towards the body (only referring to the appendicular skeleton or long bones)
What is the term Distal referring to?
away from the body (only referring to the appendicular skeleton or long bones)
