Anatomic Reference Systems Flashcards
Anatomic Position
body in standard position; standing up straight with arms at sides and palms facing forward
Vertical Planes
up and down plane at a right angle to horizon
Sagittal Plane
vertical plane that divides the body into UNEQUAL parts left and right
Misagittal Plane (midline)
sagittal plane that divides the body into equal parts left and right
Frontal Plane (coronal plane)
vertical plane that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts
Horizontal Planes
flat, crosswise plane (like the horizon)
Transverse Plane
divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions, can be at any level of the body
Ventral
front or belly side of the organ or body
Dorsal
back of the organ or body
Anterior
situated in the front, on the front or forward part of the organ
Posterior
situated in the back, on the back part of an organ
Superior
uppermost, above, or toward the head
Inferior
lowermost, below, toward the feet
Cephalic
toward the head
Caudal
toward the lower part of the body
Proximal
situated nearest to the midline or beginning of body structure
Distal
situated farthest from the midline or beginning of body structure
Medial
direction toward or near the midline
Lateral
direction toward or near the side of the body
Dorsal Cavity
located along the back of the body and head
Cranial Cavity
located within the skull, protects the brain
Spinal Cavity
located within the spinal column, protects spinal cord
Ventral Cavity
located along the front of the belly and contains the organs that sustain homeostasis
Thoracic Cavity (chest cavity or thorax)
protects the heart and lungs
Pelvic Cavity
space formed by the hip bones and contains the organs of the reproductive and excretory systems
Inguinal
relating to the groin, entire lower area of abdomen
Groin
crease at the junction of the trunk with the upper thigh
Right and Left Hypochondriac
below the ribs
Epigastric Region
above the stomach
Right and Left Lumbar
near the inward curve of the spine
Umbillical region
near the belly button
Right and Left Iliac Regions
near hip bones
Hypogastric
below the stomach
What are the abdominal quadrants?
right upper (RUQ), left upper (LUQ), right lower (RLQ), and left lower (LLQ)
Peritoneum
multilayered membrane that protects and holds the organs in place in the abdomen
Membrane
thin layer of tissue that covers a surface, lines a cavity, or divides a space or organ
Parietal Peritoneum
outer later of peritoneum that lines interior of abdomen wall
Mesentery
fused double later of the parietal Peritoneum that attaches parts of the intestine to the interior abdominal wall
Visceral Peritoneum
inner layer of peritoneum that surrounds the organs of the abdomen
Retroperitoneal
located behind the peritoneum
Peritonitis
inflammation of the peritoneum
