Anaphylactic shock Flashcards
What is anaphylactic shock
Severe rapidly progressing anaphylaxis, resulting in life threatening drop blood pressure
What position should pt be put in
Lie flat with legs raised. If having trouble breathing can sit up for a short time to breathe easier, then lie down when possible.
Tx and hospitals
Always requires a trip to ER. Anaphylaxis can turn deadly in less than 15 minutes.
Signs of shock
Low BP, rapid HB, shallow breathing, anxiety and fatigue, cool clammy skin, pale skin, gray blue tinge to lips or fingernails, enlarged pupils, nausea, vomiting. Decreased urine output
Hallmark sx of shock
Feeling a surge of adrenaline. Feel jittery or physically sick. Feel like vomiting or having diarrhea. Feel foggy, can’t think straight. May feel out of body.
Subtle sx of shock
Cool, pale extremities, delayed capillary refill, restlessness or agitation. Narrow pulse pressure or relative tachycardia
Early vs late sx of shock
Systolic bp is normal in early shock. Perfusion is profoundly affected with time, low bp, tachypnea, cool/clammy skin, agitation and altered mental status
4 types of shock
1-cardiogenic, due to heart problems. 2-hypovolemic, too little blood volume. 3- septic- due to infections. 4- neurologenic, caused by damage to nervous system
How quickly does anaphylaxis set in
Can occur within minutes. Commonly occurs within 20 minutes to 2 hours after exposure to allergens.
What can mimic anaphylaxis
Acute generalized urticaria, acute angioedema, acute asthma exacerbations, syncope 9faint) panic attacks acute anxiety
Tx of anaphylaxis
Epinephrine is only effective tx. Is a hormone made by adrenal glands. Works within minutes.
How long does anaphylaxis last
Develops rapidly, usually reaching peak severity within 5 to 30 minutes, may very rarely last several days.
Tachycardia
Hr that exceeds normal resting rate. Over 100 for adults. Heart pumps less blood flow to rest of body, including the heart.
