Allergic reaction Flashcards
4 types of allergic rx
Immediate Type1- sx appear after a few seconds to minutes. Cytotoxic type 2, sx appear after minutes to hours. Immune complex type 3, sx set in after several hours. Delayed hypersensitivity type 4, sx set in hours to days later.
Immediate type 1
Anaphylactic rx- most severe form of allergic rx. Anaphylaxis is an emergency that can lead to life threatening respiratory failure. Difficult breathing, low BP, swelling, blueish skin, shock. IgE antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to allergens. Animal dander, insect bites, dust mites, certain food etc.
Cyctotoxic type 2
Sx minutes to hours. IgG/IgM antibodies damage cells by activating the complement system of the immune system such as in: autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Graves’ disease. Etc
Immune complex mediated type 3.
Sx set in after hours. IgM/IgG antibodies react with allergens to form immunocomplxes such as in lupus, serum sickness or Arthur’s rx.
Delayed hypersensitivity type 4
Sx hours to days. Often in long term infections- tuberculosis or fungal infections
