Analytical Techniques Flashcards
Why does mass spectrometry help identify compounds?
Mass spectrometry can be used to determine the molecular formula of a compound.
How does infrared spectroscopy help you identify organic molecules?
- In infrared spectroscopy a beam of IR radiation is passed through sample of a chemical which is absorbed by the covalent bonds, increasing their vibrational energy.
What is fingerprinting?
‘Fingerprinting’ allows identification of a molecule by comparison of spectra.
How is infrared absorption linked to global warming?
Some of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun and absorbed which is re-emited as infrared radiation.Greenhouse gases like CO2, methane and water vapor absorb this infrared radiation re-emiting back towards the earth aka greenhouse effect. More heats being trapped and earths getting warmer because of a rise in greenhouse has concentrations.
