Alkenes Flashcards
What is an alkene?
Unsaturated hydrocarbons containing double bonds.
What is an alkenes general formula?
CnH2n
Why do alkenes have high electron densities?
Because they contain two pairs of electrons in the c=c bond making them very reactive.
What are electrophiles?
They are electron-pair acceptors.
How do you use bromine water to test for unsaturation?
Shake orange bromine water and if it decolorizes forming colorless dibromoalkane it contains double bond.
What are polymers?
Long chain molecules formed when monomers join together.
What are additional polymers?
Alkenes can act as monomers and form polymers because their double bonds can open up and join together to make longer chains aka additional polymers.
What are polyalkenes?
They are usually non polar and held by van der waals forces; longer the chain and closer together the stronger the van der waals forces are meaning long, straight polyalkenes are strong and rigid and short branched chains are weaker more flexible.
How does adding plasticizers modify properties of polymers?
& What is PVC
It makes polymers more flexible and the placsticier molecules get between the polymer chains pushing them apart reducing strength of intermolecular forces between chains making them more bendable.
- PVC (polychloroethene) is made from chloroethene and it has long packed polymer chains making it hard but brittle and plasticized PVC is more flexible.
