Analysing qualitative data 4 Flashcards
What is qualitative analysis according to Sparkes and Smith, 2014)?
Is an artful and scientific interpretative process of meaning-making that begins at the outset of the investigation.
It involves transcription, data management, immersion in data collection, a concern with what is in data or how it is constructed, an examination of any possible interrelationships, and a reflexive awareness of the processes of writing and representation.
How to prepare for analysis?
- Revisit your aims
- Gather field notes, reflections, photos, media
- Transcription>convert audio recordings to text
Whats the difference between deductive vs inductive analysis?
- deductive you start with the theory and your purpose is to examine the theory
- Inductive is where you don’t impose theory and you start with observation
What is grounded theory?
a systematic, yet flexible methodology for collecting and analysing qualitative data to construct theories that are grounded in the data themselves
What is discourse analysis?
explores the use of language in relation to society, culture and thought
What is narrative analysis?
make sense of, interpret and represent data in storied form
What is exercise as restitution? and what is exercise as medicine?
exercise as restitution - exercise as the means by which an ill or injured person can heal, and return to their former selves, as people ‘buy in’ to the perceived medicinal benefits of exercise
Exercise as medicine - ongoing and expanding global health initiative committed to the belief that promoting physical activity is integral in the prevention, management and treatment of disease
What is reflexivity?
how does the position of the researcher influence the results / analyse. Questions how interpretations are made.
what is the function of member checking?
- seeks to test credibility of data and results
- Match participant and researcher interpretations
- Suspect process of verifying truth of the results
What is a strength and limitation of member reflections?
- generate additional data and insight
- explore similarities and differences in interpretation of findings
- interpreting someones story may cause harm/upset
What are the four criteria of the parallel perspective?
Credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability
What is parallel perspective?
- It is a criteria for judging trustworthiness.
- It is not suitable for judging qualitative inquiry as it is philosophically contradictory
- Assumes the 4 criteria will distinguish between trustworthy and untrustworthy interpretations of reality
- Therefore getting to true version of reality
what is the Letting go perspective?
- judgements should be made based upon a lists of criteria that are appropriate to form inquiry
- these criteria are not common checklists, universal or static in nature
- characterising traits can change over time and in different contexts
What is the Criteria for excellent qualitative research?
worthy topic, resonance, rich rigorous, significant contribution, sincerity, ethical, credibility and meaningful coherence
