What is the primary use of analeptics?
Stimulate respiration
What is the effect of caffeine if given in small doses?
Small doses, it stimulates the CNS. Large doses, stimulates respiration
Under which subgroup of analeptic does caffeine and theophylline belong to?
Xanthines (Methylxanthines)
Caffeine and theophylline are used to correct what in newborns?
Stimulate respiration to correct respiratory depression
What is the other use of theophylline?
Relax bronchioles
What are the side effects of caffeine?
Nervousness, restlessness, tremors, twitching, palpitations, and insomnia. Other side effects include diuresis (increased urination), GI irritation (nausea, diarrhea), and rarely, tinnitus (ringing in the ear).
What is the effect of caffeine when ingested more than 300 mg to the heart and CNS?
Dysrhythmias, convulsions
Who is it contraindicated from?
It shouldn’t be given during pregnancy because its effect on the fetus is unknown
