Etiology.

rapid or slow onset?

A

Radiation therapy to head; chemotherapy with alkylating agents; intoxications; protein malnutrition

Anagen cycle disrupted causing varying degreeso hair ollicledystrophy:
■ Radiation therapy to head.
■ Alkylating agents: See Table 31-2.
■ Intoxications: Mercury, boric acid, and thallium.
■ Severe protein malnutrition.

Pathogenesis

A

Occurs after any insult to the hair follicle that impairs its
mitotic/metabolicactivity.
■ More common and severe with combination chemotherapy than with the use o a single drug.
Severity is generally dose dependent.

When does hair growth recurr?

A

COURSE
■ Hair regrows after discontinuation of chemotherapy.

■ Regrowth after radiation depends on type, depth, dose ractionation; may result in irreversible hair ollicle stem cell damage.
