Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
When does anaerobic respiration occur?
When your muscles do not get sufficient oxygen
What happens in anaerobic respiration?
The glucose is not broken down properly and lactic acid is produced
What happens as a result of anaerobic respiration?
Less energy is released from the glucose
What is one cause of muscle fatigue?
The build up of lactic acid
What removes lactic acid?
Blood flowing through the muscles
What must you do after exercise to remove lactic acid?
Lots of oxygen must be taken in {oxygen debt}. Eventually the oxygen oxidises the acid into co2 and water
What happens if your muscles are used for a long period of time?
They get fatigued and stop contracting efficiently
Why is an advantage of this type of respiration?
You can use your muscles for longer
What is anaerobic respiration?
Breaking down glucose without oxygen to release energy (less) for the cells
What is oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen that must be taken into the body after exercise has stopped to complete the aerobic respiration/oxidisation of lactic acid
