Aerobic Flashcards
1
Q
Where do most of the chemical reactions of aerobic respiration take place?
A
Mitochondria
2
Q
What are the reactions of aerobic respiration controlled by?
A
Enzymes
3
Q
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
A
Glucose + oxygen ——-> carbon dioxide + water [+ energy]
4
Q
What can organisms use the energy released from respiration for?
A
- build larger molecules from small ones
- enable muscle contraction in animals
- maintain a constant body temperature (mammals and birds)
- (in plants) to build sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids and then into proteins
5
Q
How can we test to see if aerobic respiration is taking place?
A
- limewater is used to detect carbon dioxide {product of aerobic respiration}. The limewater turns cloudy quicker the faster the co2 is produced.
- also possible to detect a rise in temperature
6
Q
Which organisms does aerobic respiration take place in?
A
Plants and animals
7
Q
What is aérobic respiration?
A
Breaking down food with oxygen to release energy for the cells
8
Q
Detailed equation
A
C6H12O6. + 6O2 ————-> 6CO2 +. 6H2O
