Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is anaerobic respiration?
A
generating energy from glucose without presence of O2, leading to production of lactic acid
2
Q
How does anaerobic respiration differ from aerobic respiration?
A
aerobic requires O2 and produces a significantly higher amount of ATP
3
Q
Explain the process of Ethanol Fermentation
A
- Glucose is converted into pyruvate through glycolysis.
- Pyruvate is then converted into acetaldehyde and carbon dioxide.
- Acetaldehyde is further reduced to ethanol, regenerating NAD+ for glycolysis to continue.
4
Q
Explain the process of Lactic Acid Fermentation
A
- Glucose is converted into pyruvate through glycolysis.
- Pyruvate is directly reduced to form lactate (lactic acid), regenerating NAD+ for glycolysis.
These fermentation processes occur in the absence of oxygen to regenerate NAD+ for glycolysis to continue
