Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is Anaerobic respiration ?
The breakdown of glucose into energy and lactic acid
Why is anaerobic respiration called anaerobic ?
It does not use oxygen from the air
What is the equation of anaerobic respiration ?
Glucose —> lactic acid + energy
C6H12O6 —> 2 C3H6O3
When does Lactic acid start to build up ?
It builds up in the muscles after strenuous activity
What does lactic acid lead to ?
Pain and fatigue
Is a build up of lactic acid toxic for the body ?
Yes, it causes cramps
What is oxygen debt ?
Sometimes you need extra oxygen to break down the lactic acid, the oxygen needed for this process is oxygen debt
Can anaerobic respiration happen in plants ?
Yes, also in some organisms when there is no oxygen available like plants in waterlogged soil
What is yeast ?
A microorganism used in food production
What is yeast used in ?
Bread, beer, and wine
How are products like beer and wine produced ?
Through fermentation
What is the equation for fermentation ?
Glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
