Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is the literal meaning of Aerobic ?
AERO: air
BIOS: life
Where does respiration happen ?
Inside tiny structures inside cells called mitochondria
Do all cells have mitochondria ?
Yes
Do all cells have the same amount of mitochondria ?
No, different cells contain different amounts
What do muscle cells do ?
They carry out lots of respiration
Why do muscle cells contain large amounts of mitochondria ?
Because they carry out lots of respiration
What does the body need ?
A constant supply of energy which comes from digested food
What is glucose made from ?
Digested carbohydrate and contains stored energy
When is the energy released ?
When it reacts with oxygen
What happens in body cells ?
Glucose and oxygen react to release this energy
What is respiration ?
The process of releasing energy from digested food ( glucose) when it’s mixed with oxygen
What is aerobic respiration ?
The process of releasing energy from glucose when reacted with oxygen
What is the equation of aerobic respiration ?
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
c6h12o6 +o2 —> co2 + h2o + energy
How does glucose get into respirating cells ?
Digestion breaks carbohydrates into smaller glucose molecules
These molecules are absorbed by the wall of the small intestine, into the blood stream
Glucose is then transported around the body in blood
This glucose then diffuses into cells and reaches the mitochondria
How does oxygen get into respiring cells ?
When breathing in, oxygen fills the alveoli of the lungs
Oxygen diffuses into the bloodstream
Oxygen is carried by the red blood cells in your body
Red blood cells contain hemoglobin
Oxygen attaches to the hemoglobin and gets transported around the blood
The oxygen is released into cells that require oxygen for respiration
