ANA 307 Nasal Cavity Flashcards
Discuss the development of the facial prominences in the mid face
At the end of the fourth week of fetal development mesenchymal cells of neural crest origin starts aggregates to form the facial prominence in the mid face
What occurs after the development of the facial prominences
On either side of the frontonasal prominences nasal placards bilateral thickening of the surface of ectoderm are formed
What occurs during fifth week of the development of the nasal cavity
During the fifth week the nasal placodes invaginate from the nasal pits and the tissue ridges surrounding the pits from the lateral and medial nasal prominences
The maxillary prominences continue to expand medially; shifting the medial nasal prominences toward the midline in the following 2 weeks
The two medial nasal prominences eventually fuse given rise to the medial portion of the upper lip and anterior palate
How does cleft palate occur
Cleft palate occurs due to the failure of the lateral palatine processes to properly fuse
Discuss the formation of the nasolacrimal duct
A furrow between the lateral nasal prominence and the maxillary prominence involutes to become the nasolacrimal duct
What is the nasolacrimal duct
It connects the nose mouth and eyes
The external nose is derived from how many facial prominences
5
List the facial prominences and what they form
- The frontal prominence forms the nasal bridge
- The fused medial nasal prominences give rise to the lip
- the lateral nasal prominences become the alae
When do the paranasal sinuses begin to develop
During the eighth week of gestation
Describe at first happens in the development of the paranasal sinuses
A series of folds on the lateral nasal wall called the ethmoturbinants that appear during 8 week of gestation 5-7 folds initially appear after process of fusion and regression 3 to 4 folds remain by week 15
What is the origin and fate of these folds?
These folds are considered ethmoid on origin.and they ultimately become upper turbinants in the lateral nasal wall
What occurs to the 1st ethmoturbinal?
It regresses during the Development period and remains at its rudimentary form
The ascending portion becomes the___ and the descending potion forms the______
Aggernasi
Uncinate process
What occurs to the 2nd ethmoturbinal?
