AMYGDALA Flashcards
What does the amygdala do?
coordinates and integrates the beh, autonomic, and hormonal components of the emo response!
Which nuclei in amygdala is involved in emotional responding?
Central nucleus is prominent
Where does amygdala receive INPUTS from?
Ventromedical prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) ~ emotional regulation
thalamus (sensory input)
hippocampal formation (memory)
Where does the amygdala PROJECT to?
thalamus –> prefrontal cortex
vmPFC
hypothalamus–> midbrain–> pons–>medulla (which control aspects of emo response)
What is the MOST CENTRAL part of the brain?
CENTRAL NUCLEUS!
Tell me about central nucleus..
It’s the most impt part of the brain for emotional response due to aversive stimuli.
When central nucleus is damaged, what happens?
diminish/gone range of emotional behaviors and responses. Ex. ANIMALS DON’T SHOW FEAR of threatening stimuli
What happens when CN is stimulated?
induces fear and agitation….. long term = ulcers
What is the Conditioned Emotional Response (CES)?
With fear of neutral stimuli … damage to CN –> no CES
you acquire it through observation + instructions
vmPFC helps w/ extinction
when this is damaged: decreased emotional responsiveness, memory, and judgement
What happens when there’s damage to the CES?
decreased emotional responsiveness, memory, and judgement
