goals of amp:
retain blood supply**
protect muscles**
preserve as much limb as possible
retain healthy skin and sensation
is it safe to weight bear on disarticulation
yes
T or F. the higher the amp. the more difficult to use prosthesis
true, because fewer joints and muscles are available for control.
what are some precautions to look for
checking the stump for skin breakdown
watching for compensatory movements of the body
what are the levels of LE amputations
BKA
AKA
knee disarticulation
foot amputations (toes)
what happens in a BKA:
tibia and femur are separated
amp through the shin bone
what happens in a knee disarticulation
knee joint is separated and lower leg is removed
thigh is retained
minimal blood loss
what happens in AKA:
amp through thigh bone and above knee joint
loss of muscular control in hamstrings and quads
what is a contracture
shortening of muscle due to lack of balance
BKA is a contracture of what muscles
hamstrings
AKA is a contracture of what muscles
hip flexors.. recommend prone sleeping to relax hip flexors (iliopsoas)
do not place pillows beneath the knee in BKA or under stump in AKA
