A
  • Irritates the peripheral sensory receptors of the nasal septum, causing reflex stimulation of the respiratory & vasomotor centers.

Contraindications

A
  • Altered Mental Status with a possible mechanism associated with:
    • Respiratory distress
    • Cardiac symptoms
    • Neurological Deficits
    • Trauma
    • Syncope of unknown etiology

Adverse Effects

A
  • Respiratory
    • Bronchospasm
    • Wheezing
    • Airway Irritation
    • Pulmonary Edema
    • Laryngospasm
    • Stridor
    • Cough

A
  • Wave inhalant a few times 4 inches from nostril.
  • Not recomended for pediatrics.

Special Considerations

A
  • Repeat doses should not be required, lay the pre-syncopal pt supine & maintain alertness with continued verbal and physical stimulus.
  • Use caution in patients with a history of respiratory problems as the inhalant may cause bronchospasm
  • Syncope may indicate a significant underlying illness or injury.
