Mechanism of Action
A
- Irritates the peripheral sensory receptors of the nasal septum, causing reflex stimulation of the respiratory & vasomotor centers.

Indications
A
- Simple syncope & the prevention of syncope

Contraindications
A
- Altered Mental Status with a possible mechanism associated with:
- Respiratory distress
- Cardiac symptoms
- Neurological Deficits
- Trauma
- Syncope of unknown etiology

Adverse Effects
A
- Respiratory
- Bronchospasm
- Wheezing
- Airway Irritation
- Pulmonary Edema
- Laryngospasm
- Stridor
- Cough

Administration
A
- Wave inhalant a few times 4 inches from nostril.
- Not recomended for pediatrics.

Special Considerations
A
- Repeat doses should not be required, lay the pre-syncopal pt supine & maintain alertness with continued verbal and physical stimulus.
- Use caution in patients with a history of respiratory problems as the inhalant may cause bronchospasm
- Syncope may indicate a significant underlying illness or injury.
