Mechanism of Action
A
- Binds with drugs & chemicals within the GI tract and decreases intestinal absorption in the OD situation thereby preventing toxicity.
- The poison & charcoal compound is then excreted from the body.

Indications
A
- Oral poisoning, overdose and/or ingestion of drugs or chemicals.

Contraindications
A
- Pediatrics < 35 kg
- Decreasing LOC unless intubated prior to administration
- Ingestion or poisoning due to cyanide, corrosives, petroleum distillates, ferrus sulfate (iron), ethanol, methanol, lithium, due their large molecular size.

Adverse Effects
A
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Black Stools

Administration
A
- 1 gm/kg PO (75 gm is typical)

Special Considerations
A
- Do not administer prior to Syrup of Ipecac
- Use with caution in Acetaminophen OD. Follow protocols.
