Amino Acids Flashcards
What composes the structure of an amino acid?
Amino group, carboxyl group, side chain, and a hydrogen
What is an amino group?
It is an NH2 group that can accept a proton to become NH3+
What is a carboxyl group?
Is a COOH functional group that can dissociate to become COO-
What determines the identity of an amino acid?
The side chain
What is the only amino acid to not have a chiral center?
Glycine
Which amino acids have nonpolar side chains? (Aliphatic/Hydrophobic)
Ala, Val, Leu, Ile, Gly, Pro, and Met
Which amino acids are acidic?
Glu and Asp (they have carboxyl groups in side chains)
Which amino acids are Basic?
His, Lys, and Arg (all have basic side chains)
Which amino acids are essential?
