Amino Acids Flashcards
What is a zwitterion?
A molecule with positive and negatively charged groups
What is the most naturally occurring amino acid configuration?
L-configuration
Why are amino acids amphoteric?
They have both an acid and basic group
What groups does an amino acid contain?
Amino group, carboxyl group, H, and a side chain. The α carbon is chiral (with 1 exception)
What amino acid does not have a chiral carbon?
Glycine
In amino acid chains, when the pH of a solution is lower than the pKa, what state is the H+ in?
H+ is on
In Glycine, if pH of solution is 3 and the pKa of the amino group is 2.6 and 7 for the carboxylic acid group, what is the charge?
Amino group is not protonated so has no charge. The carboxylic acid group is protonated so has no charge. The is no charge overall
What reaction forms a peptide bond?
A condensation reaction
What are the 2 ends of a protein linked by a peptide bond?
N-terminal end and C-terminal end
What restricts rotation with a peptide bond?
Double bond characteristics
What does the lack of rotation in peptide bonds limit?
The secondary structures that the peptide bond can take
