A

1890-1924 ~18 million immigrants from southern/eastern Europe. Seeking economic betterment, many had plans for return migration. Led to chain migration of families, leading to the construction of cultural school and churches. Immigrants were seen as a potential public health hazard.

Open Door notes by John Hay Developed into policy in 1899. The United States saw the division of China as a risk to U.S interests. Policy claimed that China should be left open for free commerce. Imperialist interests

A

1904 by president Roosevelt. Expanded the Monroe Doctrine to state that the U.S has a right to intervene in Latin America. Protects the territories that the U.S gained following the Spanish- American War.

Muckraking Journalism

A

Journalism during the PROGRESSIVE ERA (1890-1920). Goal: expose corruption, greed, and exploitation. Then arouse reform. One of the most popular works was Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle (1906), a novel about the meat packing plants in Chicago. Outrage of the public.

A

William Howard Taft (incumbent Republican) v. Woodrow Wilson (new freedom: pull apart corporate power w/out big govt.) v. Theodore Roosevelt (progressive bc lost republican primary to TAFT: Counter rights/power of corporate through BIG GOVT. (New nationalism) ) v. Eugene Debbs (Socialist). Wilson wins with 42% of the vote.

Committee on Public Information

A

Headed by George Creel. made pro war propaganda. Trained “Four Minute Men” to go around the country and give 4 min speeches to encourage support for the war. Formed the idea that public opinion exists and can be manipulated. STARTED THE UNDOING OF PROGRESSIVE IDEOLOGY.

Red Scare

A

Following WWI: Vets return home leads to high unemployment. Thus labor strikes (3,300 strikes). Strikes were seen as “un-American”
The Bolshevik Revolution in Russia during the war led to the rise of Vladimir Lenin in Russia, And the rise of communism.
Attempted Mail bombs sent to public figures in the spring of 1919 by anarchists leads the Palmer Raids: Raid of radicals without search warrants. Most were jailed without counsel. AMERICANS FELT THAT MINIORITES RIGHTS WERE VIOLATED.

Ethnicization

A

During Immigration. Becoming an ethnic group through migration and invented traditions. Nations were new so immigrants were tied to towns rather than nations. (EX: ST PATTYS DAY HERE)

  1. Closed immigration by setting a quota for each ethnic group for each year. Quotas set based in the % of ethnic group in population during 1890 (before New Immigrants had come). Excluded Asians entirely. Creates border control between mexico/canada.

Spanish American War

A

Feb 1898, USS Maine explodes in havanna harbor. Portrayed as an act of Spanish aggression. April 19, 1898, US declares war. Leads to Teller Amendment, US does not have the goal to annex Cuba. US blockades Cuba. The Spanish surrender: US gets Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

A

Helped America fight in the Spanish American war. He opposed US colonialism in the Philippines, which did not allow for Philippine self govt. Leads to the Philippine-American war, 3 yrs of geurilla warfare.

  1. Prohibited all spying and “enemy activity”. Allows for control of mail. Suspended anti-war groups mailing privileges. Mail searched and people jailed. Led to Alien Act.

A

Presented by Wilson at the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. Wilson internationalist.
-Democracy and national self determination (Stop imperialism) No scramble for spoils. Open Diplomacy: no more secret treaties (triple Entente & triple alliance). Freedom of seas/ trade. League of Nations: bring sovereign nations together to solve problems together democratically.
EUROPEANS ONLY AGREE TO LEAGUE OF NATIONS. THE US DOES NOT RATIFY.
GERMANY GET WRECKED BY REPARATIONS.

Bonus Army

A

The army was supposed to receive a Bonus from the government in 1945 for their service in WWI. Veterans marched on Washington for their bonus early due to the Depression. Hoover refuses, he then sends the federal army to evict the bonus army. FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN OF HOOVERS POLITICAL CAREER

Agricultural Adjustment Act

A

part of the 100 days (1st New Deal).
Prices had gone down for farmers products and could not raise the price. The act paid farmers to not produce. However the act paid landowners, not tenets. Landowners kicked tenets off their land. Prices went up, there was no longer a crop surplus, and less farmers.

Civillian Conservation Corps

A

During 1st 100 days. Combined work with relief, employing 2.5 mil men ages 18-25. Took young single men out of the city industry, housed and fed them, and had them send 75% of their paycheck home. Thus giving labor jobs in the city to men with families to take care of.

Works Progress Administration

A

Part of the 2nd New Deal (1935-36)
Spending on public works: hospitals, parks. Over 125k buildings were built. There were buildings built in every congressional district in the US.

Wagner Act

A

1935: Guaranteed workers the right to bargain collectively (Unionize). Created the National Labor Regulation Board which helped negotiate between unions and businesses. Huge boom in unions and then organized strikes. RESPONSE TO NRA BEING RULED UNCONSTITUTIONAL

A

1935: System of payroll deductions to fund pensions, unemployment insurance, workers comp, and families with dependent children. Excluded agricultural and domestic workers (Largely Black).

Scopes Trial

A

1925 in Dayton Tennessee. Tenn. passed a law that it was illegal to teach Darwinian Evolution. Manufactured trial. Scopes was found guilty because the judge did not consider the constitutionality of the law. Clarence Darrow Defends Scopes v. William Jennings Bryan (religious fundamentalist). Broadcasted live over the radio. FUNDAMENTALISM v. SCIENCE

2nd KKK

A

Began to Rise in Atlanta 1915 following the lynching of a Jewish man. Racist, anti-semtic, anti-catholic, anti-immigrant. Prominent in the south and midwest. Very mainstream with members in the govt. “Pro American”. Biggest influence in the 1924 election with the defeat of Al Smith (a catholic) by Calvin Coolidge. Fell apart in the mid 1920’s following accusations against a leader.

Prohibition

A

18th Amendment passed in 1919. Prohibits sale, manufacturing, transport, and import/export of alcohol. Passed due to the pressure of social moralists, women, progressives, Jim Crow supporters, and nativists. Ended in 1933. NOT VERY EFFECTIVE (RUM ROW, SPEAKEASIES, HOUSE PARTIES)

Harlem Renaissance

A

During 1920’s Harlem Emerges as center of Black culture. Concept of “the new negro”- urban, prosperous, cultured. Not just African-Americans, but migrants as well. Jazz and other arts become popular. White people travel to Harlem to go listen to music etc.

Nye Committee Hearings

A

1935: named after Senator Gerald Nye. Investigated war profiteering in WWI. Determined that the US went to war because of corporate interests (WWI did pull the US out of the depression).

Four Freedoms

A

Given in a speech read at FDR’s 1941 state of the union. Laid out the aims of the allies is the war.
1. Freedom of speech
2. Freedom of religion
3. Freedom from fear
4. Freedom from want
however these freedoms were not for everyone

Executive order 8802

A
  1. Due to pressure from A. Phillip Randolph, the leader of the union for Black sleeping car porters, FDR signs Executive Order 8802. This order prevented racial discrimination in government and defense contractor employment.

Executive Order 9066

A

Feb. 1942. Declares the west coast a military area and requires Japanese people to evacuate the area. They were then brought to assembly areas (relocation centers) and then sent to incarceration. They were denied basic civil rights and had all property taken from them. No credible evidence to warrant imprisoning them

Yalta Conference

A

Feb. 1945: FDR meets w/ Churchill and Stalin in Yalta. Russia agrees to enter the war in the Pacific 3 months after the war in Europe is over. In exchange Russia would get Manchuria as a sphere of influence following Japan’s defeat.
