American foulbrood (AFB) agent

A

Paenibacillus larvae, the causative organism.
Gram-positive bacterium, motile.
4 genotypes: ERIC I, II, III and IV (II to IV highly virulent)
Only spores produce infection. Spores extremely heat stable and resistant to chemical agents.
Larvae cannot be infected later than 53 hours after the egg has hatched.
