Why was alcohol banned?

A

C19th - strong temperance movement in rural areas of the USA campaigned people to give up alcohol. Most people were devoted Christians. Claiming 3000 infants were killed every year by drunk parents, drinkers were unpatriotic cowards as the brewers were German, communism thrived on drink and saloons were dens of vice.
