What were women like before the war?
-Led restricted lives
-Couldn’t vote
-Middle and upper class women were expected to act politely all the time
-Middle and upper class women were expected to wear sensible clothing
-Relationships with men were strictly controlled
What were women’s lives during the war?
-Women took over the jobs for the men who went away to fight
-They worked just as hard as men and money they gained earned them a sense of independence
-Women were given the right to vote in 1920
-By 1929 there were around 10.5 million women with jobs
How did women’s lives change after the war?
-More women lived on their own
-Some women began to behave differently - wearing more revealing clothes
-Less likely to stay in an unhealthy marriage
What were the characteristics of flapper girls?
-Mainly middle class and upper class women
-Some rode Motor bikes and went to night clubs with men
-Wore inappropriate clothing and lots of make up
-Smoked and drank alcohol
