The 13 colonies
Europeans came to North America looking for religious freedom, economic opportunities, and political liberty. They created 13 colonies on the East Coast of the continent. Later, when the colonists won independence, these colonies became the 13 original states.

Navigation acts
England passed laws called the Navigation Acts in the 1600s and 1700s to regulate trade in each English colony, or place under the rule of their nation. Goods which were imported, or brought in, and exported, or sent out, were subject to strict regulations.
