Amber Book Wood Flashcards
What does a split ring connector connect and how does it work?
connects timbers, bolt is distributed over a larger area bc the ring is between the timbers
What are timber rivets?
small but numerous bolts to make one large connection?
What is a stressed skin panel?
a strong panel with sheathing on both sides
What is a mortise and tenon?
slot joints for timber connection
What span of cavities requires a firestop?
greater than 10 feet. In balloon framing
Where is a double top plate?
above the cripple studs
What are the uses for wood blocking?
short pieces of lumber that fills between studs, act as firestops, spacing between studs, stiffens, reinforces and helps to support loads
Where is a lookout located?
the overhangin gpart of the roof perpendicular to the trusses
Where is a rimboard located?
it sits on top of header of the floor below or foundation and seals the open ends of the joists.
Where is an ice guard located?
under the shingles to prevent damage to the structure.
What are the two options to insulate a crawlspace?
- ventilate crawlspace and insulate under the floor. 2. Insulate walls and not floors and dont ventilate airspace.
What is the minimum vent area?
1/150 of the attic footprint. OR if vapor barrier, 1/300 of area
Which woods are rot resistant?

Name the softwoods.
spruce, pine, larch, cedar, hemlock, redwood, fir
What does S-Dry mean?
19% moisture content
What is the difference between plainsawn and quarter sawn lumber?
plainsawn is parallel to grain and all the wood is used. quartersawn is more dimensionally stable and more expensive
What is a percentage of moisture for wood exposed to the outside? inside?
12% and 8%
What is the order of shrinkage direction largest to smallest? longitudinal, radial, tangential
