Alzheimers (4) Flashcards
1
Q
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
A
It is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the abnormal accumulation of proteins in the brain (Amyloid and Tau).
2
Q
What are the three stages of Alzheimer’s?
A
- Presymptomatic.
- Prodromal.
- Dementia.
3
Q
Where do amyloid and tau develop?
A
Amyloid – outside the cell.
Tau – inside the cell.
4
Q
What is the STM binding test and was does it assess?
A
- Involves colour and shape remembrance and matching colours and shapes.
- The ability to integrate information into the STM and hold information as individual items is assessed.
- Failure on this task indicates a likelihood to develop dementia.
5
Q
What radiotracers have allowed AD to be detected well before symptoms become apparent?
A
PET.
6
Q
What aspect/syndrome of AD does the STM task assess?
A
Brain connectivity.
7
Q
What methods use the eyes to measure AD?
A
Pupilometry and eye-tracking.
8
Q
Which can you use to investigate the association of brain connectivity and integrative memory functions AD? (3)
A
- EEG.
- DTI.
- MRI.
