Alzheimer’s disease and other types of Dementia Flashcards
Name the main parts of the brain
- Cerebrum.
* right and left hemispheres - Cerebellum
- Brain Stem
List different brain lobes
frontal lobe
temporal lobe
thalamus
basal ganglia
parietal lobe
occipital lobes
cerebellum
brainstem
function of the frontal lobe
speech, movement, social skills, judgement
function of the temporal lobe
memory, hearing, art/music, understand language
function of the thalamus
spatial attention, depth perception, consciousness, sleep
function of parietal lobe
depth perception, writing/reading, calculation
function of occipital lobe
sight, processing visual information
function of cerebellum
balance, attention, coordinate movement
function of brainstem
breathing, heart rate, blood flow throughout the body
dementia risk factors that cannot be controlled
Age
Sex
Genetics
Dementia controllable risk factors
o Hypertension
o Smoking
o Diabetes
o Lack of physical activity
o Obesity
o Poor diet
o Alcohol consumption
irreversible forms of Dementia
alzhemimers
vascular dementia
Lewy body dementia
frontotemporal degeneration
huntingtons disease
What is alzheimers disease
-Most common form of dementia (60-80%)
-Progressive degenerative disease of the brain which causes thinking and memory to become seriously impaired
Signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s
- Memory loss affecting day-to-day abilities
- Difficulty performing familiar tasks
- Difficulties with language
- Disorientation in time and space
- Impaired judgement
what is Vascular Dementia
2nd leading cause of dementia – 10-20%
White matter changes in the brain
Caused by ischemic or hemorrhagic
cerebrovascular lesions often from a
series of small strokes (clots or bleeds)
symptoms of vascular dementia
- Changes in the ability to make decisions, plan or organize
- Difficulties with movement, such as slow gait and poor balance
Risk Factors of vascular dementia
─ Hypertension
─ Atrial fibrillation
─ High cholesterol
─ Smoking
─ Diabetes
what is frontemporal dementia
- 10% of all Dementia Cases
- Dementias that primarily affect the frontal and
temporal lobes of the brain - Usually appears in 5th -6th decade of life
Primary Dementias 22
behavioural changes with Frontotemporal Dementia
- Withdrawn or disinhibited behavior (e.g., inability to restrain actions).
- Loss of interest in personal hygiene.
- Easily distracted or repetitive behavior.
- Overeating or putting foreign objects in the mouth.
- Incontinence or urgency to use the toilet
what is Lewy body dementia
- Accounts for 5-10% of all Dementia Cases
- Caused by abnormal deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein in brain cells, called Lewy bodies
Brain Areas Affected:
oThinking and cognitive processes
oMovement and motor control
Lewy body dementia symptoms
Symptoms are similar to both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease
- Problems with attention and executive function, but memory impairment may not be as obvious in early stages
- Rigidity (stiffness of muscles)
- Tremors (shaking)
- Stooped posture
what are the mixed dementia
- Alzheimer’s disease + Vascular dementia
- Lewy Body + Alzheimer’s disease
- Lewy Body + Parkinson’s disease
Protective Factors in Reducing risk of
Dementia
o Keeping your brain active
o Protect your hearing
o Manage Hypertension
o Do not smoke
o Maintain a healthy BMI
o Treat your depression
o Be physically active
