Q

Steps of looking at cells in the body, e.g. liver cells.

A
  1. Remove from body
  2. Fixation- preventing them from naturally degrading and damage due to processing for microscopy, preventing autolysis (self death). This often uses temperature, acids, microwaves, and chemicals
  3. Mount on medium for sectioning (often using paraffin wax block) and trimmed
  4. Cut using a microtome sliding into 5-7 micro metre thick
  5. sections of paraffin then floated on warm water bath and picked up onto glass slides, dried, wax removed, rehydrated and stained with histological stains
  6. Cover with coverslip to prevent from drying out
