Altitude (Pressure) Flashcards
Indicated Altitude
What your altimeter reads
True Altitude
How high you are in MSL (Sea level)
Absolute Altitude
How high you are in AGL (above the actual surface)
Pressure Altitude
Barometric pressure scale set to 29.92
Density Altitude
Pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature
When is indicated altitude equal to true altitude?
When you’re parked on the ground with the correct altimeter setting
If you fly from high pressure to low pressure without adjusting the barometric settings, what type of error will your altitude indicator have?
Actual altitude will be lower than the indicated altitude
When you go from low altitude to high altitude with no setting adjustment, what error will your altimeter be expressing?
Actual altitude will be higher than the indicated altitude
How many feet for every 1 inch of mercury?
1000ft for every 1 inch
How do you calculate density altitude?
Using a chart
First take your field elevation and correct for non-standard temperature using the chart
Plot your X coordinate by subtracting the pressure altitude by the density altitude the following the slanting line.
Plot your Y coordinate using the temperature
Make a horizontal line at the intersecting point of the X and Y axis. That is your density altitude.
