What services does ATC provide?
Markings: SEGMENTED MAGENTA LINE (when it’s purely class E), Fuzzy Magenta (when the floor is 700ft AGL), and Fuzzy Blue (when the floor is 1200ft AGL)
Must have a student pilot certificate
No equipment requirements

Above 10,000ft 5-111, 5 miles visibility, 1000ft above, 1000ft below, 1 mile horizontal
ATC provides IFR separation and VFR traffic advisories upon request
Class G
How is it marked on the chart?
Requirements to enter?
Instruments required?
Qualifications?
VFR visibility requirements?
What services does ATC provide?
Marked with FUZZY MAGENTA LINE (when the ceiling is 700ft AGL), Fuzzy Blue Line (when the ceiling is 1200ft AGL)
No equipment requirements to enter
Must have student pilot certificate
Below 1200ft: 1 mile visibility, clear of clouds during day
AT NIGHT: turns into controlled airspace requirements (3-152)
ATC provides traffic advisories upon request
What are the special VFR parameters?
1 mile visibility and clear of clouds
Maximum speeds…
Below 10000ft?
Below 2500ft within Class C/D airspace and within 4nm of airport? Also in Class B VFR corridors.
Below 10000ft the max speed is 250kts
Below 2500ft within 4nm of airport is 200kts
Alert Area
Designated on charts to inform pilots of unusual types of aerial activities (lots of pilot training, parachute jumping, glider towing, etc…)
Military Operation Area (MOA)
Are VFR aircraft allowed to fly through?
What should you check to find out more about them?
VFR aircraft are allowed to fly through although they should exercise extreme caution.
Wise to avoid them if possible.
Usually involve military training with acrobatic and abrupt flight maneuvers at high speeds
Chart supplement contains more info about them
Warning Area
Extends three nautical miles toward from the coast of the United States that contains activity that may be hazardous to nonparticipating aircraft
May contain hazards such as aerial gunnery and guided missiles
Restricted Areas
Can pilots fly through these?
What hazards can be expected?
Permission to fly through must be granted by the controlling agency
Often have invisible hazards to aircraft such as artillery firing, aerial gunnery, or guided missiles
Prohibited Areas
Can pilots fly through?
How are they marked?
Established for security reasons associated with national welfare
Flight is entirely prohibited without permission from the controlling agency
Marked with a capital p followed by numbers on the chart
What is the lowest you can fly in a Conservation Area?
2000ft AGL
Military Training Routes
3 vs 4 digit numbers
Can you fly through them?
Generally established below 10000ft MSL for aircraft with speeds above 250kts
3 digit numbers = operations above 1500ft AGL
4 digit numbers = operations below 1500ft AGL
Flying through them is not restricted although it’s a good idea to check with flight service before flying through them
