Alternate Fuels Y8 Flashcards
What are the three types of fossil fuels?
Natural gas, crude oil and coal
What is natural gas used for?
Cooking and heating
What is crude oil used for?
Petrol and diesel for cars
Jet fuel for planes
What is coal used for?
Generating electricity
How is coal created?
Millions of years ago, trees and plants died and were buried under layers of mud.. over Millions of years the heat and pressure turned the plant remains to coal.
How is natural oil and gas made?
Millions of years ago, sea creatures died, the fell to the sea bed and were covered by sand and squashed. Over millions of years the heat and pressure caused the remains to turn to crude oil and natural gas.
How do we get crude oil and gas?
We use oil rigs to drill the bottom of the ocean
When are solid particles produced?
During incomplete combustion. They contain soot (carbon) and unbury fuel
Problems with burning fossil fuels
Acid rain and enhanced greenhouse effect
What is the two ways acid rain can form?
1.sulfur is a common impurity found in fossil fuels, it reacts with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide. This reacts with water in the atmosphere to form sulfur is acid (acid rain)
- The high temperature inside an engine allows nitrogen and oxygen in the air to react together forming nitrogen oxide. This then reacts with water and oxygen to form nitric acid resulting an acid rain.
Name alternate energy sources to fossil fuels(8)
Biogas (from food waste)
Biomass
Solar energy
Geothermal energy
Hydrogen
Solar thermal energy
Wind energy (winter turbines)
Hydropower(uses flow of water)
Word equation for hydrogen fuel cells?
Hydrogen+oxygen—> water (+energy)
What are hydrogen fuel cells?
They can safely harnessed the energy that the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen provides.
Where can we get hydrogen from?
Electrolysis uses electrical energy to split water into oxygen and hydrogen.
Advantages of hydrogen power cars
Easily accessible
Better for the environment as it only produces water
