Alterations of generations and developmental trends Flashcards
Gametophyte generation
The stage which produces sex cells in plants and
algae.
Sporophyte generation
Generation of a plant with alternation of generations that begins from a diploid zygote.
Meiosis
The process in eukaryotic, sexually-reproducing animals that reduces the number of chromosomes in a cell before reproduction.
Mitosis
A part of the cell cycle in which replicated chromosomes are separated into two new nuclei.
Haploid
A cell that contains a single set of chromosomes.
Diploid
A cell that contain two copies of each chromosome.
Fertilization
Process of combining the male gamete, or sperm, with the female gamete, or ovum.
Germination
A process, controlled by enzymes , in which the seed begins to develop into a new young plant.
Sexual Reproduction
A type of reproduction that involves a complex life cycle in which a gamete (such as a sperm or egg cell) with a single set of chromosomes (haploid) combines with another to produce an organism composed of cells with two sets of chromosomes (diploid).
Asexual reproduction
Type of reproduction that does not involve the fusion of gametes or change in the number of chromosomes.
