The Alpine Convention was created in 1995 between the 8 Alpine countries: Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland, along with the European Union (EU).

Switzerland has not ratified protocols of the Alpine Convention because the Swiss central government found that the convention was opposed by most of the mountain cantons (districts).
