Precautions / Interaction of Alpha aAdrenergic blocker

What the Side / Adverse effects ?

A

Increase risk of hypotension and syncope if given with other Antihypertensive, Beta blockers and diuretics .
NSAIDs can decrease the effects of Prazosin

Side / Adverse effects

Dizziness

Fainting

Alpha adrenergic blocker Action and Therapeutic uses

A

Selectively inhibit Alpha 1, Adrenergic receptors, resulting in peripheral arterial and venous dilation that lowers blood pressure

Medication eg;
Prazosin ( Minipress)

Doxazosin mesylate (Cardura)

Therapeutic uses
Primary hypertension
Cardura may be used in treatment of BPH

NURSING INTERVENTION AND CLIENT EDUCATION

A

Monitor heart rate and blood pressure

Take medication at bedtime to minimize effects of hypotension

Notify prescriber immediately about adverse reactions

Consult prescriber before taking any OTC medication.
