What were Wilson’s main aims from the TOV?
- make the world safe for democracy
- America were less affected than GB and FR so he could be more relaxed and less harsh in the peace treaty.
- International co-operation
What were Clemencau’s main aims from the TOV?
- Harsh peace with Germany
- Ensure security of France
- Satisfy the National desire of revenge on Germany
What were Lloyd George’s main aims from the TOV?
- Wanted peace
- Punish Germany, but not too harshly
Did Clemancau get what he wanted from the TOV?
- Kind of: as the Military were effected greatly and Germany were maid to pay large amounts of money, however France felt dangoursley exposed on the Eastern Front leading him to not being re-elected. He also wanted a Harsher punishment.
Did Wilson get what he wanted from the TOV?
-Yes, USA were still able to trade with Germany. However, the treaty was too harsh, the league didn’t disguise that the allie leaders were taking the German land and there was not a successful peace settlement
Did Lloyd George get what he wanted from the TOV?
-Mostly, as Germany were punished harshly in their eyes due to the Armed forces clause esspacilaly the weakened Navy after the Zepplin Raids. However he was annoyed that France and Poland were given land which was directly ruled by them
Overall, was the TOV successful in terms of what the Big Three desired?
-None of the big three leaders were satisfied
Why did the Allie leaders find it hard to daw up the TOV?
- Wilson kept changing his mind
- Clemancau had an obscenite character
- The big 3 did not speak, only when required
- All had alternating aims
- Clemancau clashed with Llyod george due to GB’s desire to not punish Germany too harshly
Why do people argue the Treaty was fair?
- In 1917 the Germans treated Russia awfully via the Brest Litovsk Treaty. It was much worse than the TOV. Giving a harsh treaty was now seen as a ‘prize of war’.
- Economic issues in Germany were self-inflicted, other nations raised taxes, the Kaiser did not which allowed debts to mount up
What did Wilson outline in his speech about creating a fair and just treaty?
14 Point plan
Did Lloyd George agree with Wilson?
- In public George praised him, not so much privately
- They agreed that Germany should not be punished too harshly
- Both were worried a harsh treaty might lead to a communist revolution like Russia 1917 (Brest-litovsk)
- Main thing in George’s mind was to enhance the British empire
What pressures did Lloyd George face?
- UK wanting revenge on Germany as they had 1 Million + casualties and food shortages
- Uk believed Russia were treated to harsh in 1917
- He had to stick to his slogan from his election process ‘make Germany pay’
Did Clemancau agree with Wilson?
- In public yes as they both wanted international peace
- Publicly Clemancau didn’t slate the 14 point plan but he said God only needed 10 commandments
- major disagreement was the France should cripple Germany so they can never attack them again
