realist bargaining assumptions
examines how power is used in negotiations among states
this theory argues that small allies can increase their bargaining leverage if
1. they hold more intense preferences than the alliance leader 2. if they threaten to defect or to remain neutral in disputes among the superpwoers 3. if the superpower percieves a high level of threat 4. if the allies pool resources and confront the alliance leader with a unified position
hegemonic stability theory
argues that states will ally with the most dominant actor
this state argues that a powerful state provides order in the international system
this theory also implies that weaker states might have to submit to greater powers
