IgE Mediated hypersensitivity to specific allergens

- sneezy, stuffy, itchy, clear runny nose
- itchy, teary eyes

A
Pale swollen nasal mucosal

What are the complications of allergic rhinitis?
A
- Serous Otitis Media
- Chronic sinusitis
- Nasal polyps

How would you treat allergic rhinitis?
A
- Educate - identify and avoid allergens
- Saline irrigation
- antihistamine
- intranasal steroids (topical)
- oral steroids (severe)
- oral decongestants (ø in kids)

Do patients with allergic rhinitis require referral to a specialist?
A
No, b/c 2º environment usually. Nothing can be done even if allergen identified.
