Bold experiment of Indian Army

A

For the Indian Army with its background of over two hundred years wherein there was no thought ever of mixing different classes within an infantry unit, this was indeed a bold experiment, and as such, it was watched carefully not only by the Army but by the Government and the Nation. The question uppermost in everyone’s mind was whether this would promote national integration, and whether the men thus bound, fight with the same zeal as they did in the name of their class Brigade of the Guards was conceived on the lines of the British Cold Stream Guards by late Field Marshal K M Cariappa.

Q

What inspired you to join Indian Army?

A

The obsession with uniform led me to choose NCC . There are many reasons. I remember when I was in RDC in year 2019. Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi mam had visited our AP and T directorate cantonment area. Luckily, I had come there with my buddy to collect snacks at 11am and refill our bottles. She seemed to be very tired. She had a kind of aura jo maine kahi nahi experience kiya tha. I got very curious about what is that which is keeping her so motivated. I was keenly listening to her every word. She was having conversation with our GCI Bala mam was very close to her. When she created history by becoming the first woman to lead an all-men contingent at the parade at Rajpath on 70th Republic day. I was totally in awe.

Then when I heard about The all-women Assam Rifles contingent participated for the first time in aRepublic Day parade. Major Khushboo Kanwar, a 30-year-old mother, lead the contingent of the Assam Rifles. I still remember Major Khusboo Kanwars words “I am the daughter of a bus conductor from Rajasthan and if I can accomplish this, any girl can fulfil her dream.”

And the best part the real daredevil Captain Shikha Surabhi, from the Corps of Signals did a heart-in-the-mouth stunt, standing atop the seat of a moving motorcycle and saluting the President of India. All my perceptions got cleared “Men and women were marching shoulder-to-shoulder to serve the nation,”

In NCC after having a close peek into the Indian Army. I was convinced that Yes!! This is the organisation where I want to be a part of lead my life more than ordinary. Coz, yeh dil maange more.

Any PVC or MVC from your tirupati? Or Maj Gen Chittoor Venugopal

A

Major General Chittoor Venugopal was commissioned into the Indian Army in the 1st Gorkha Rifles (The Malaun Regiment), on 10 December 1950.

At the time of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was commanding the 5/1 Gurkha Rifles battalion which was deployed in Jessore area of the Eastern sector. On 4 December 1971, his battalion encountered well fortified Pakistani positions at Uthali and Darsana which had a series of concrete pillboxes interconnected with elaborate communication trenches. Lieutenant Colonel Venugopal laid a meticulous plan of attack and showing disregard for his own safety, personally led the attack. After capturing the two positions, the 5/1 Gurkha Rifles battalion pursued the withdrawing enemy troops, giving them no rest or time to regroup, leading to the capture of Jhenida three days later. For his leadership and aggressive battle planning resulting in large military gains, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second highest gallantry award.
