Alkenes and their reactions Flashcards
What is the general formula of an alkene?
CnH2n
How many hydrogens fewer does an alkene have, compared to its matching alkane?
2 fewer hydrogen atoms but the same number of carbon atoms
What are the first 4 alkenes called?
Ethene, propene, butene, pentene
What makes an alkene unsaturated?
The presence of the double bond
What general way do alkenes react?
via addition reactions
What is a functional group?
A group of atoms in a molecule that determine how that molecule typically reacts
What is an addition reaction
It’s where the double carbon bond will open up to leave a single bond and a new atom is added to each carbon
What is the addition of hydrogen also known as?
Hydrogenatation
What is the product of an alkene + hydrogen?
the equivalent, saturated, alkane
What is needed for hydrogenation to happen, besides hydrogen and the alkene
A catalyst
How is alcohol made from an alkene?
Alkene + steam (+ a catalyst)
Which molecule is added across the double bond to form an alcohol?
H2O
What is the product of a halogen reacting with an alkene?
Haloalkane
What is the test for alkenes?
Bromine water test. Add bromine water to an unsaturated compound (an alkene) and it will go from orange to colourless
