Alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
Why are alkenes fairly reactive
A
Double bonds have a high electron density
2
Q
Cycloalkenes
A
Have two fewer hydrogens than the straight chain version of the same molecule. Eg C5H8 instead of C5H10
3
Q
Sigma bonds
A
When two orbitals overlap and they align horizontally to give a single covalent bond.
4
Q
Pi bonds
A
Parallel overlap of two p orbitals
5
Q
Why does pi bonds have lower bond enthalpy
A
They are weaker and electron density is spread out above and below the nucleus. So electrostatic attraction is weaker
6
Q
Why are alkanes not as reactive as alkenes
A
Alkanes are non polar
7
Q
What are alkenes good for
A
Polymers and petrochemicals
8
Q
electrophile
A
electron pair acceptor
